The Bridgefest Artwalk
Shortly after Hurricane Katrina,
Mississippi Department of Transportation
Commissioner Wayne Brown proposed symbolically tying
the old bridge to the new by utilizing the salvaged
bearing plates from the old bridge in a way that
will showcase local artists.
A
contest for designs, sponsored by the Mississippi
Department of Transportation, was held between March
23 and April 16, 2007. Sixteen Hancock and Harrison
county artists and twenty-two works were selected by
the Mississippi Arts Commission and announced by
MDOT in May, 2007.
Artists with work selected for the
bridge are: Joan Coleman, Terry Blake Edwards, Anita
Gallagher, Jorge Lovato, Julie Mello, Tazewell
Morton, Shea Nicosia, Vicki Niolet, Yuki Northington,
Laura Pecoul, Donna Riviere, Patricia Rigney, Lea de
Vaux Saucier, Elizabeth Schafer, Henry Stiller, Jr.
and Robert Waldrop.
The winning entries were cast into
bronze plaques, utilizing metal salvaged from the
old bridge, by Pass Christian sculptor and
ironworker Greg Moran. Mr. Moran created 22 plaques
and corresponding mile markers were installed every
1/10 mile along the pedestrian lane. In addition to
work by the 16 winning artists, the Bay of St. Louis
Bridge showcases the work of Marty Wilson, who
created the monolith pylons located at both
entrances to the bridge.
