Art Auction Features Original Watercolor

A silent auction will be held during Bay BridgeFest 2009, offering work by several Bay Bridge Artwalk artists, as well as a framed painting that was chosen as the official 2009 Bridgefest poster design.

BridgeFest Poster Contest Winner

The auction kicks off on Friday, May 15th during the Patrons’ and Sponsors’ Party held in Old Town, then continues throughout the next day during the BridgeFest main event. Final bids will be accepted in the afternoon, with the winners being announced at 6pm on the 16th. All auction proceeds are slated to benefit downtown development through the national Main Street program, “Hancock Hometowns.”

Up for bid are several framed colorized line drawings that were used to create the bronze cast plaques on the bridge pedestrian/bike path. Work of other area artists will also be represented in the auction, including the whimsical painting by artist Janie Koch, that was selected as the official design for the 2009 Bay Bridgefest posters and t-shirts.

The posters and t-shirts featuring Koch’s design will be on sale from 11am – 8pm during the festival on Saturday. The limited edition posters will sell for $25 and the t-shirts for $15.

Koch, a member of The Arts, Hancock County, said she was thrilled when her work was chosen for the honor.

“My friend Connie Heitzmann and I wrote a book called the Gulf Coast Memories Scrap Book. Last year we dressed as pirates and sold it from a Bridgefest booth. We had a blast. I wanted to participate this year in some fashion so decided to enter the contest.”

The mother of 15 year old twin sons explained that she incorporated elements from both the original Bay-Waveland Yacht Club festival site and the new site in Old Town into the painting.

“I used light, airy and happy colors,” Koch said. “I wanted to reflect our hopeful new beginning. It’s wonderful to feel like my work is part of the recovery in Bay St. Louis.”

Bridgefest 2009 is sponsored by Hancock County Chamber of Commerce, City of Bay St. Louis, Hancock County Board of Supervisors, City of Waveland, Hollywood Casino, Silver Slipper Casino, Coast Transit Authority, Sun Herald Multi Media, The Sea Coast Echo, South Mississippi Living, and the MS Department of Transportation.
