Officials from the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources announced today that a $25,000 grant has been approved to support a plan for Gulf Coast Scenic Byways Directional signage in Hancock County.

The project, managed by the Hancock Chamber of Commerce for the Community Development Foundation, will support placing 11 signs along Highway 90 in Bay St Louis and Waveland to direct people to business districts and heritage tourism resources to drive business sales.

The grant is matched by the work of the Hancock County Board of Supervisors provided to design and engineer a comprehensive plan for a system of interpretive and directional signs for the Mississippi Beach Boulevard Scenic Byways program.

“This is significant to local businesses as the Chamber continues to focus on initiatives to drive more business to local merchants during annual Shop Small Shop Chamber campaigns each holiday season,” said Tish Williams, executive director of the Hancock Chamber of Commerce.  Williams says when more people are directed off Highway 90 in to the business districts to enjoy our heritage tourism resources local citizens and government benefit from the increased sales tax diversions that will be generated to support services like police and fire protection.

Using signage, this project will help tell the area’s nationally significant story celebrating our area’s unique history, people, tradition and landscapes.  It will guide people to resources to showcase waterways, nature areas, history and the arts.  It will take visitors to one-stop visitor center locations where they can obtain printed materials with themed tours and clusters and view interpretive exhibits.  For more information go to www.gulfcoastscenicbyways.com and www.msgulfcoastheritage.ms.gov.
