All Aboard: Gulf Coast Amtrak Service Surpasses Expectations
Just months after launching, the Gulf Coast’s Amtrak passenger rail service is already proving to be a major success—outpacing projections and reconnecting communities across the region in a meaningful way.
According to a recent feature with our Membership Chair Nikki Moon and WWL-TV, the train—linking New Orleans to Mobile with stops along the Mississippi Gulf Coast—was expected to serve around 71,000 riders in its first year. Instead, it surpassed 80,000 riders in just six months, signaling strong demand and widespread community support.
The route, often referred to as the “Mardi Gras Service,” has quickly become one of the most talked-about transportation options in the region. With convenient stops in Bay St. Louis, Gulfport, and Biloxi, it offers an easy, affordable way to travel the coast—whether for work, events, or a quick getaway.
Leaders say the success of the service is not only about transportation—it’s about connectivity. The train is helping drive tourism, support local businesses, and strengthen regional ties across Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama.
Even more encouraging, ridership has remained strong throughout the week, not just on weekends—showing that this is more than a novelty. It’s becoming part of everyday life on the Gulf Coast.
As investment continues and improvements are planned, the future of passenger rail in our region looks bright. For coastal communities like ours, this service is more than a train—it’s a connection to opportunity.
